New Be Wise — Immunize toolkits available

TMA’s Be Wise — ImmunizeSM program

offers two toolkits to help physicians provide the best vaccination care to their young and adolescent patients. The Phy- sician Manual for Children and the Physi- cian Manual for Adolescents were recently updated. Both toolkits are free for TMA members. “Think of these as playbooks for phy-

sician quarterbacks leading their clinic teams in a red-zone offense against vac- cine-preventable diseases,” said Edward J. Sherwood, MD, of Round Rock, an in- fectious disease specialist and member of TMA’s Be Wise — Immunize physician advisory panel. The comprehensive immunization

toolkits contain a manual for physicians and educational materials for patients. The physician manuals highlight:

• Best practices for improving vaccina- tion rates;

• Talking to parents about vaccinations (including safety and importance);

• How to use ImmTrac (the Texas Im- munization Registry); and

• Free fact sheets, office posters, and other patient education materials.

To order the toolkits, contact Tammy

Wishard, TMA’s outreach coordinator, at (800) 880-1300, ext. 1470, or (512) 370-1470, or email tmaoutreachcoordi- nator@texmed.org. TMA physicians launched the Be Wise

— Immunize program in 2004 to boost Texas’ immunization rates. To date, the program has administered more than 199,000 shots to Texas children. Be Wise — Immunize is a joint initia-

tive led by TMA physicians and the TMA Alliance. Funding for Be Wise —Immu- nize comes from the TMA Foundation, thanks to generous support from HEB, TMF Health Quality Institute, and gifts from physicians and their families.

Be Wise — Immunize is a registered service mark of the Texas Medical Association.

CPRIT’s goal is to expedite innovation and commercialization in cancer research and to enhance access to evidence-based prevention programs and services throughout the state. CPRIT accepts applications and awards grants for cancer-related research and for the delivery of cancer prevention programs and services by public and private enti- ties in Texas. All CPRIT-funded research is conducted in state by Texas-based sci- entists and reflects CPRIT’s mission to attract and expand the state’s research capabilities and create new high-quality jobs in Texas. n
