Equestrian traditions in Saumur

Known as the Cadre Noir for their distinctive uniforms of black and gold, the horsemen of Saumur, elegant, disciplined and impeccably skilled in the art of dressage, are the guardians of the art of French horsemanship. The academy of Cadre Noir de Saumur is their training ground. Here equestrians from around the world are schooled in “technique and art,” adhering to the principles and military traditions of classical horsemanship. These traditions extend to their dress as well; riders cut a sharp figure, from their cocked hats to their polished boots, handmade to perfection by one of Saumur’s acclaimed bootmakers, part of a team of equestrian-minded locals who you will meet during your visit.

Time at leisure in the town of Saumur gives you the opportunity to have lunch on your own in a sidewalk café within the shadow of the

immense Château Saumur, perched above the old town. Surrounded by vineyards, the town is also renowned for its champignons; you may want to sample a mushroom or two with your meal! The art of living in the Loire Valley continues with a visit to the nearby town of Turquant, where you may see artisans, gilders and glassblowers among them, at work in their craft shops. Stretch your legs and your imagination on an afternoon hike along the “windmill road” through the inspirational countryside – the scenery is rewarding everywhere you look!
