OUR PROJECTS

Assessing the environmental impacts of one of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farms

We are the Lead Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant for Scottish Power Renewables Argyll Array offshore wind farm. The site is close to one of the small islands on the West Coast of Scotland and at 1.8GW, the Argyll Array wind farm would be the largest offshore wind project in Scotland Territorial Waters. There are many challenges and issues to consider. We are undertaking a Social Economic Impact Assessment, being sensitive to the fact that the local community is small and remote. Landscape, seascape and visual impacts are important. Also, understanding the impacts on sediment transport and wave climate is key, due to the area being known for attracting basking sharks and its popularity for wind and wave sports.

Lead engineer for civil work on the UK’s 4th largest offshore wind farm

Sheringham Shoal is the UK’s fourth largest wind farm. The 88 turbine array covers an

area of 35 square kilometres and are 80m or 260m in height and built approximately 20km off the coast of Sheringham in Norfolk. Multiconsult supported the Statoil design team as lead engineer for onshore civil works activities for the wind farm. The activities included the construction of 21km of underground cables from landfall on the coast to the inland substation and construction of the inland substation.

Screening offshore wind farm zones in France

We have supported our strategic partner, Multiconsult, on the evaluation of two of five areas of search identified by the French Government for offshore wind, which they are exploring to support their commitment to the EU Renewable Energy targets. The project has involved GIS constraint mapping and collation and interpretation of data, including input from specialist French subcontractors to appraise environmental project risks. We have provided specialist expertise on ‘lessons learnt’ from the UK with regard to screening, best practice guidance and Cumulative Impact Assessments.
