congregational mission Collectively,

Called to service When the last ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans rallied young people to service, the youth of First Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Neb., came home determined to make a difference in their community, said Aaron Erdley, one of the pastors. They realized that Lincoln, like other cities, has issues of hunger, poverty and homelessness. When they toured a local mission they noticed a children’s center in a large, rundown warehouse. After two years of planning, designing, cleaning and building, they made it a fun and safe place for the 50 to 70 children who live there, raising $6,000 in the process.

Lutheran in cathedral For the first time the Anglican dio- cese of Rupert’s Land has appointed a Lutheran pastor as its dean, reported the Anglican Journal. Paul Johnson is the first Canadian Lutheran pas- tor appointed dean in an Anglican cathedral in Canada. The Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangeli- cal Lutheran Church in Canada have been in full communion since 2001, which means clergy may serve in one another’s churches. Johnson begins his appointment in January, succeeding Dean Robert Osborne, who retired.

SBC examining name The Southern Baptist Convention could be renamed after President Bry- ant Wright set up a task force to con- sider a new identity for the nation’s largest Protestant denomination. “The name ‘Southern’ really no lon- ger reflects who we are as a conven- tion in reaching all of North Amer- ica,” Wright said. Southern Baptists have debated a possible name change numerous times. At their 2004 annual convention, 55 percent of voters defeated a measure that would have set up a committee to study the matter.

Dating method draws ire Some British Christians are incensed after the state-funded BBC decided to change historical date references. The broadcaster replaced B.C. (Before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini, or Year of the Lord) with B.C.E. (Before Common Era) and C.E. (Common Era) in its TV and radio broadcasts. The BBC said in a statement that since it is “committed to impartial- ity, it is appropriate that we use terms that do not offend or alienate non- Christians.” The edict drew imme- diate accusations that the network was guilty of political correctness run amok as the BBC’s phone lines were jammed with irate listeners and readers.

Religion deals online The online coupon service Groupon has inspired religious organizations to try similar tactics, including Jew- ish sites Jdeal and Jewpon, which offered half off the “Fundamentals of Talmud” learning system, and ChristianDeals.org, which offered a discount on flip-flops from Christian retailer God Feet. Spending on social online deals is expected to hit $2 bil- lion this year, according to a media industry consultant BIA/Kelsey, Chantilly, Va.

Oppression continues

The U.S. State Department recently reinstated the eight nations labeled as the most serious violators of religious freedom. They are Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Ara- bia, Sudan and Uzbekistan. “It is our core conviction that religious toler- ance is one of the essential elements not only of a sustainable democracy but of a peaceful society that respects the rights and dignity of each individ- ual,” said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
