and a multicultural Reformation service at Living Grace Lutheran Church, Tucker, Ga. The lat- ter service involves “worship in the seven or eight different lan- guages of our synod,” Flanigan said. “Everyone will be able to see themselves in that service.”
This year Lutheran Theologi- cal Southern Seminary cel- ebrated the 100th anniversary of its Columbia, S.C., campus. Founded in 1830, the semi- nary was originally located in Pomaria, S.C. After nearly a century of moves around South Carolina and Virginia, the school found a permanent home in Columbia in 1911. Its original three-story building, Beam Hall, housed a classroom, chapel, dormitory, library and faculty offices for 20 students and four faculty members. Today the hall and seven other buildings pro- vide educational space for 145 students and 15 faculty.
Happy 300th Henry. Lutheran Theological Seminary at Phila- delphia launched a celebration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, “the father of American Luther- anism,” on Sept. 6 (his birth- day). The launch included wor- ship, workshops and a lecture by ELCA pastor and theologian Martin Marty. The entire cel- ebration, a combined effort of the seminary and Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa., will involve related events, activi- ties and more throughout the 2011-12 academic year. Leaders from both schools hope to raise awareness of Muhlenberg’s leg- acy—familiar to few outside of church and colonial U.S. histo- rians. Learn more at http://ltsp. edu/muhlenberg300. M
