Delivering a solid storage solution

Dean Edwards, Director Engineering & Operations and Tim Wright, Technical Support Manager, Storage Device Division, Toshiba Europe GmbH, discusses the rise of the solid state drive and how it’s shaping up to meet enterprise storage needs of the future.

usinesses today are at risk of a data overload. With increasing internet speeds, consumerisation of IT in the work place, access to HD and 3D video content and the rise of social media, digital data is at an all-time high – and set to grow every day. Demand for storage solutions with the ability to cope with this data deluge is rising rapidly.

Analyst IDC estimates that the amount created or replicated in 2011 will be 1.8 zettabytes , increasing by a factor of nine over the next five years. That’s equivalent to 57.5 billion 32GB iPads or 200 billion high definition movies. With such vast volumes of data to contemplate,

it comes as no surprise that storage is a pressing concern for enterprises globally. Businesses are looking for large capacity storage solutions that are still cost effective and as such, the need for market players to respond with the right technology innovation to meet this growing data stream is crucial.

The solid state drive has been hailed as the future of the storage market but is it truly the right technology to meet the digital avalanche that is coming our way?
