SPIRITUAL READING

Why Be a Catholic? by Mark Dooley (Burns & Oates, 136pp, £10.99). This is a timely book that seeks to revitalise a faith that is all too apt to flag in this time of crisis. Dooley faces up to the clerical sex-abuse scandals, but shows us a Church that still keeps the flame of faith alive. Finding Christ in the world, by meeting him first in the sacraments, is paramount. This is writing with which liberal Catholics may find much to disagree, but its heartfelt plea deserves to be heard. Tablet price £9.90.

On Being Saved: the roots of redemption by Rod Garner (Darton, Longman and Todd, 128pp, £14.99). This is an extended meditation on the place of redemption in the gospel message. It begins with a joy- filled assumption that the world is already transfigured with beauty. Religion needs to speak to people’s strength and celebrate their capacity for love. At the same time, we are called to an awareness of the dark- ness within ourselves. Garner seeks the redemptive in such things as the scattered memory of someone with dementia, or the kind of laughter that foreshadows heaven. Tablet price £13.50.

Unmasking God: revealing the divine in the ordinary by Daniel O’Leary (Columba Press, 144pp, £10.99). The author seeks to help us to regain the divine ability to discover the promise of joy and peace already residing within our hearts. It tries to unmask God, instead of – as religion all too often does – to conceal him. In a series of short meditations first published in The Tablet, O’Leary examines how we can discover the true meaning of incar- nation, the news that we are extravagantly loved. This is a beautifully written book, charged with meaning. Tablet price £9.90.

Gods Behaving Badly: media, religion and celebrity culture by Pete Ward (SCM Press, 176pp, £19.99). In this wide-ranging book, Pete Ward looks at how the distinc- tions between popular culture – in particular celebrity culture – and religion have become blurred. We sit in judgement on the “sins” of celebrities, our gods. From Michael Jackson and Elvis to Princess Diana, celebrity worship has a partial reli- gious significance which Ward terms “para-religion”. Its culture relies on audi- ences and readers being active in generating meanings around stories. Celebrities, however, are more than their images: they are reflections of what we might want or not want to be. This is an illuminating and original analysis which addresses a key question. Tablet price £18. Rima Devereaux
