Chief for a Day – Selected candidates from high schools and college level who are interested in or studying criminal justice submit an essay on what they hope to learn by being Chief for a Day. Shop with a Cop – A col- laborative with the Long Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce and other local groups. It is held prior to the start of school in August to assist un- derprivileged children with the purchase of new school clothing and supplies. JUMP and Youth Leadership Academy - A school-year and sum- mer program for at-risk high school students, giving them support, a mentor and a hand-up for a better way of life. Power 4 Youth (562) 435-2352 www.power4youth.org Middle-school students are matched with a volun- teer for one-on-one academic mentoring at super- vised locations in Lakewood and Long Beach; year- round. Regular field trips are offered, plus career guidance for teens. $10 registration fee.


YMCA Programs for the entire family include child-care, fitness, teen clubs, day and resident camps (see “Camps”), youth sports, aquatics and gymnastics. Parent/child programs (grades K+) are also offered to promote companionship between parents and their children (father/mother and son/daughter). The Trailblazer program is available for older children (9- 17) and their parents. Many YMCAs also offer off-site programs at schools and recreation facilities, and ac- cept third party funding such as GAIN or CAL Works.
