Day 5: Hayden Valley and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Head off aboard a snowcoach to explore more of the park’s interior. Yellowstone Lake is frozen over by early December, and spends most of the winter under a sheet of ice nearly a yard thick… except in places where hot springs warm things up sufficiently to create patches of open water, where you might see otters at play. Arrive by snowcoach in Hayden Valley, one of the park’s richest habitats for wildlife including elk, coyote, and buffalo. In winter, when the lower falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone freeze magnificently and an ice bridge forms across the canyon – you’ll feel you have this awesome place all to yourself. Tonight, it’s a special event – meet filmmaker and writer Dayton Duncan, who collaborated with Ken Burns on The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and other films. Dayton shares many of his own personal stories of the national parks and takes you behind-the-scenes in the making of the acclaimed documentary.

Day 6: A day to explore – and to meet Ken Burns

Yellowstone is a winter paradise for the traveler looking for a little outdoor adventure... and today is free to help you find it, whatever your definition of the word “adventure”! Optional activities you might engage in (with some requiring an additional cost)

Gerard Baker Gerard, a Mandan-Hidatsa Indian, grew up on a reservation in North Dakota breaking horses, running cows and doing chores on his family’s ranch. By night, he listened to stories told by tribal elders, from which he learned about his people, who he was and who he wanted to be; his insights and stories are compelling.

include ice skating (the rink is open dependent upon the weather); snowshoe walks and hikes, a great way to get out and connect with the wintry geothermal landscapes; cross-country skiing, with miles of trails throughout the park; and snowmobiling. Visit the interesting Old Faithful Visitor Center – newly opened in 2010, it overlooks the main attraction, Old Faithful Geyser. The Center is also the venue for one of the highlights of our Tauck Winter in Yellowstone Event this evening – the keynote address by Ken Burns, who will share stories and insights on Yellowstone and other national parks gathered throughout his years of work on The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Following the presentation, you’ll have an opportunity to meet and speak with Ken Burns, and have cocktails and dinner at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge.
