Could your school be a record breaker?
Do your pupils get excited by amazing feats of accomplishment? Do they love big facts that stretch the realms of possibility? Would they like the chance to meet real life record breakers, or even attempt a record themselves? This autumn your pupils could have the chance to enjoy all of these opportunities with the launch of a new primary schools programme from the Guinness World Records. For the first time primary
schools will be able to have free access to a resource pack with a range of videos, photos, and record breaking facts and figures that will help you to illustrate the curriculum. The free cross-curricula material is designed for key stage 2 and
includes lesson plans with a range of content from Guinness World Records. Each resource pack includes homework and take-home information for pupils to continue learning and research tasks with their parents. One lucky school registering for the programme will also have the
chance to win a Guinness World Record live event and be visited by the tallest man in the world (pictured). Not only will the pupils enjoy an educational session which celebrates amazing accomplishments and demonstrates that anything is possible, but they will also be able to participate in a record breaking attempt themselves and a chance to enter the famous records book. Guinness World Records will work closely with the winning school
on choosing record attempts that are most suitable for their age, and how best to engage parents and the wider community during the Easter term of 2012.

The children’s charity Variety Club has announced its first ever Sunshine Week which will take place between September 19 and 23. This fundraising initiative is aimed at children between five and 13 to help bring them together to fundraise in aid of disabled and disadvantaged children in the UK. Each school taking part in Sunshine Week will have access to
downloadable supporting materials through the dedicated website. Included on this site are posters, sponsorship forms, fundraising ideas and lesson plans. As well introducing children to the Variety Club and the fun of charity
fundraising, the initiative also helps deliver aspects of the national curriculum key stage 1,2 and 3 as well as citizenship and PSHE. On Friday, September 23, the week’s activities culminate in a
national Sunshine Day with a “call to action” in which pupils at every participating school will be asked to bring in £1 or whatever they can afford, and wear or do something sunny for the day. Suggested ideas and lessons plans to support the day are available on the Sunshine Week site. All funds raised during Sunshine Week will help the Variety Club
to continue its important work of providing specialist Sunshine Coaches, electric wheelchairs and all sorts of practical equipment to help give disabled and disadvantaged children and young people the independence and freedom to maximise their potential.

The world’s leading charitable funder of Type 1 diabetes research, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) has updated and relaunched its toolkit Talking T1 - Learning about Type 1 Diabetes which is designed to help schools support children with Type 1 diabetes in the classroom. The incidence of Type 1 diabetes in children aged under five has increased five-fold in the last 20 years. “If you do not already have a child in your school living with type 1
diabetes you can expect one soon,” Katy Pickering, head of outreach at JDRF said. “It’s vital that schools are prepared and able to support children with the condition.” The charity is relaunching the comprehensive cross-curricular
resources and management pack to ensure the resource is compatible with the national curriculum. Originally launched in 2009, the pack has been redeveloped and redesigned by education and health professionals. With new and improved content, the toolkit will enable teachers, headteachers and school nurses to understand the needs of children with Type 1 diabetes in the classroom and to successfully integrate them in their learning environment. It complements the Department for Education and Department of Health guidance – Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Year Settings. The resource is supported by Lilly, a leading healthcare company with
a long heritage in diabetes, and, is available free to all primary schools helping to meet statutory requirements for admissions and provision of education for children with the condition.

As part of its latest campaign, environmental charity BTCV is asking schools to have fun outdoors while supporting access to local green space in the run up to October half term. Thousands of volunteers
from the charity will be improving parks and green spaces throughout BTCV’s Big Green Weekend (October 21-23) and urging people to get out and enjoy them. The charity wants schools to get involved in the fun too by taking
part in BTCV’s Tree-Sure Hunt, a tree-spotting challenge which aims to get children learning about and enjoying nature while raising money for charity. The sponsored challenge can be done in any local park, woodland or green space. Registration is now open and BTCV has provided a range of
resources. It is up to pupils whether they collect seeds, leaves or bark rubbings, but teachers will be able to download and print off a tree checklist and a handy mini-tree identification guide to help pupils in their search. To thank children for all their efforts, there will be a special certificate available to download. BTCV works at the heart of communities to make sure that everyone
enjoys the benefits of access to good quality green space. The charity needs to raise funds to continue its environmental work throughout the UK and to ensure green space is protected and improved for future generations to enjoy. BTCV’s Big Green Weekend also includes a national awards ceremony
to recognise volunteers and a flagship event in Regent’s Park, London, on October 22 which features a Tree-Sure Hunt, family activities and volunteering sessions. Events are also taking place in France, Germany, Iceland, Estonia and Greece.
