Wanted: young global campaigners
The 2012 Steve Sinnott Award for the young global education ambassadors of the year is now open for applications from year 10 students. The award was set up by family, friends and colleagues of former NUT general secretary Steve Sinnott, who died in 2008.
The award is run by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) and gives two students and their teacher the opportunity to travel abroad to find out what life is like for children who do not go to school, and to meet local young campaigners, charity workers and politicians. On their return, the winners will speak to UK politicians and the media about their experiences and take part in making a short film.
Last year’s ambassadors Navdeep Bual and Tasir Yeahia, both 15, from Seven Kings High School in Ilford, travelled to Guatemala. They are pictured at the House of Commons with TV presenter Claudia Winkleman, supporting the GCE’s Send My Sister to School campaign.

Rip-roaring conference
Almost half the delegates attending this year’s disabled teachers’ conference in June were first-timers. Workshops discussed the SEN Green Paper, defending disabled people in the workplace, and promoting positive attitudes in schools. NUT General Secretary Christine Blower and Peter Purton from the TUC talked about the disproportionate effect of the public sector cuts on disabled people.
Liz Crow, disability artist-activist and founder of Roaring Girl Productions, showed a film about her Resistance production, which was very well received. It describes the Nazis’ programme of mass-murder of disabled people. She talked about rights and resistance in contemporary society, and her appearance on Antony Gormley’s Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. (
