Thermo Fisher Scientifi c has launched a new laboratory information management system (LIMS) for clinical laboratories, serving the emerging fi elds of translational and personalised medicine. Thermo Scientifi c Clinical LIMS is designed to improve the management of laboratory workfl ow in the clinical lab while promoting better communication between physicians and the lab. By bringing together the sample- centric core functionality of a LIMS with the patient-centric compliant functionality of a traditional LIS (laboratory information system), Clinical LIMS supports streamlined and automated information fl ow, following the patient from point-of-care to molecular testing, results analysis, diagnosis and treatment.

neXtProt

The Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and GeneBio have launched neXtProt, an online knowledge platform on human proteins to provide life scientists with a broad spectrum of information on all human proteins via an intuitive interface. Since its Beta release in January 2011, it has already had more than 51,000 unique visitors.

StarVue

Optibrium, a provider of software solutions for drug discovery, has launched a new version of StarVue, its free desktop application that enables scientists to quickly and conveniently view sets of compound structures and related data. StarVue 1.1 is compatible with the recently released StarDrop 5, a software platform for the design and selection of high quality compounds in drug discovery. This means that compound data generated with StarDrop and other sources can be shared without the need for expensive spreadsheet plug-ins.

the visual interface and capacity for organising, sorting and merging data sets that StarVue previously offered. Data can be easily loaded into StarVue from SD, MOL, SMILES or CSV fi les, as well as StarDrop’s native format. The close integration of StarVue and StarDrop makes the results of StarDrop’s unique predictions and multi-parameter analysis available to a wider audience, improving the fl ow of information and a project team’s ability to make effective decisions in targeting novel molecules with the required balance of properties to become drug development candidates. www.optibrium.com/starvue

It provides healthcare professionals with easier access to test data originating in the clinical diagnostics testing laboratory. It facilitates compliance with all industry regulations related to patient privacy, such as the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and those related to clinical testing such as Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). It also supports the most widely used ANSI-accredited standard for interoperability of health information technology (Health Level 7 Messaging – HL7) and is designed to enable laboratories to operate in compliance with regulatory requirements. www.thermoscientifi c.com/ informatics

Gathering as much data as possible on human genes and proteins is essential to scientists focusing on human health and disease. SIB and GeneBio’s scientists, software developers, and biocurators have been working closely together since 2009 under the leadership of Professor Amos Bairoch, to make sense of the huge body of data on human proteins. www.nextprot.org

Genedata Expressionist 7.0

Genedata has released the latest version of its Expressionist software for mass spectrometry. A complete, enterprise-level solution for managing and analysing large amounts of mass spectrometry (MS) data, Genedata Expressionist 7.0 advances quantitative measurement of proteomics with support for Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM), as well as metabolomics, with support for infusion approaches. Unicode support of special characters in experiment names or annotations (including Japanese) and improved

DIAdem 2011

National Instruments has announced DIAdem 2011, the latest version of the software tool designed to make locating, inspecting, analysing and reporting on measurement data more effi cient. The new version gives engineers a new data-loading method for access to large data sets in less time than before, a new DataPlugin Wizard for migrating from Excel to DIAdem and enhancements to the REPORT panel for more dynamic report creation. Analysing and reporting time- based measurement data presents particular challenges that the software overcomes out of the box. It is optimised to operate on large data sets, includes engineering-specifi c analysis tools and features powerful report

CytoGenomics 1.5

Agilent Technologies has released its CytoGenomics 1.5 software, an analytical tool that gives researchers the ability to streamline their analyses by querying the in-house CytoGenomic database and external databases. The solution includes CGH+SNP microarrays for determining copy number changes and copy neutral aberrations on the same chip, DNA labelling kits, microarray scanners and

automation platforms. Designed for easy data interpretation and simple report generation, it helps users exploit the performance of the arrays, maximise throughput, and complete their CGH and CGH+SNP workfl ows. The software was developed to allow cytogeneticists to gain insight into the biology of their samples, quickly and confi dently. www.agilent.com/genomics

handling of multiplex experiments are also among the latest enhancements. Integrating and analysing a wide variety of proteomics and metabolomics workfl ows, Genedata Expressionist processes large experimental data sets from all major vendors and technology platforms – regardless of data formats. The system’s data analysis and management capabilities are magnifi ed with comprehensive, interactive visualisations. www.genedata.com

and script creation editors for automating repetitive data- processing tasks. With new fl exible loading options, engineers can choose to delay loading bulk data from Technical Data Management (TDM) and TDM Streaming (TDMS) fi les until absolutely necessary. This approach references data in place on disk during analysis and reporting without compromising the integrity of the original data stored in the fi le. www.ni.com/diadem
