EDF REVEALS LATEST ADDITION TO ELECTRIC VEHICLE FLEET
Partnership between London 2012 Sustainability partners aims to promote low carbon travel
E
DF has announced a partnership with fellow London 2012 Sustainability partner, BMW Group, to increase its fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK by leasing
35 fully electric, London 2012 and EDF branded MINI Es. The MINI E is the latest British icon to become part of EDF Energy’s low carbon vision for London ahead of the Games following partnerships with the EDF Energy London Eye and Tower Bridge announced earlier this year. During Games time, 30 of the MINI Es from the EDF fleet will become part of the BMW Group London 2012 official vehicle fleet.
Ahead of the Games the vehicles will be made available for use by customers and employees of EDF Energy, a UK subsidiary of EDF Group. EDF Energy hopes the iconic MINI E fleet will serve to help further develop the electric vehicles market in the UK. Forecasts suggest that there will be 660,000 plug-in vehicles in the UK by 2020 and with electric vehicles
having the potential to offer up to a 40% CO2 saving
compared with a typical family petrol car in the UK. Over the full life cycle, this could have a significant impact reducing the carbon emissions associated with transport. In recent electric vehicle trials, EDF Energy saw that over 80% of all recharging takes places at home. In response, the company has launched EcoRecharge – a home charging package that includes installation of a safe and convenient charge point, smart meter, consumption statement, timer and Eco 20:20 tariff. The MINI E has played a vital role in influencing the thinking behind BMW i, a sub brand of BMW Group which will offer transport strategies and new types of vehicles for sustainable mobility. During everyday usage, the MINI E can travel around 100 miles on a single charge, depending on driving style and conditions, and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds. Olympic gold medallist and athlete ambassador for EDF and member of BMW Group London 2012 Performance Team, kayaker Tim Brabants adds: “The Games is not just about getting people to take up sport - it’s an inspiring global platform which can bring to life important issues like sustainability. From my work as an ambassador for EDF and BMW Group I know that transport makes up a large part of our individual carbon footprint so promoting greener travel is important if we’re to tackle climate change. It’s therefore great to see two London 2012 Sustainability partners, EDF and BMW Group, working together to support the development of the electric vehicles market in the UK and beyond.”

SUSTAINABLE
CLASSROOM BLOCK OPENS AT DERBY COLLEGE
A brand new £1million classroom block designed by Pick Everard for Derby College has opened at its Broomfield Hall campus after just 24 weeks in construction. This timber-framed, stone- fronted building has been built using the latest sustainable materials and methods by Derby-based contractor G F Tomlinson. The two-storey Chatsworth

block has eight Wifi-enabled classrooms, two laboratories and forms a key part of the development plan at the Broomfield Hall site, the county’s centre specialising in land-based education. Land- based studies there include agriculture, horticulture, equine, arboriculture, floristry, animal care and countryside management; these latest facilities will enable the college to offer a wider range of subjects. Paul Rothera, Project Director at Pick Everard explained that the timber frame and prefabricated timber panels allowed for a very fast construction
timetable, full compliance with Building Bulletin 93 acoustic requirements, and an economical build cost. He explains, “This project is a good example of the way in

which schools and colleges have to look very hard at reducing expenses through energy-efficiency and environmentally friendly design and construction. By working closely with Derby College and the contractor to agree what the priorities were, the build costs per square metre have been reduced by about 30%. We’ve not compromised acoustic standards, have a naturally- ventilated building and by being very rigorous in terms of the specification, we achieved a square metre construction cost of less than £1000.”
The new block was officially opened by Councillor Carol Hart, local Derbyshire County Councillor and Cabinet Member for Communities. Derby College Director of Enterprise and Innovation
Louise Curd said, “We have worked closely with our construction partners to use sustainable materials and construction methods. This enabled the whole project to be completed in just 24 weeks and has resulted in a building that is totally in keeping with the local environment and will provide first class facilities for students for many years to come.” Following the completion of the new classroom block, Derby College has appointed Pick Everard to design its new Equine Centre. This project will be delivered in two phases with the first to include an indoor arena and second phase to include welfare facilities, classroom
accommodation and spectator area, all to British Horse Society (BHS) standards.
