GREEN IT AWARD GOES TO THE DEPARTMENT FOR WORK AND

PENSIONS AND XEROX Sustainable print project gives DWP a world class service and cuts electricity usage

T

he Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has won the Green IT Awards’ Public Sector Project of the Year for 2011. The award recognised DWP’s sustainable print project, delivered in partnership with Xerox, which has cut the amount of electricity the department uses. In March 2010, DWP began a joint sustainable print service project with Xerox to cut printing costs and reduce energy use through a managed print service. With Xerox’s help the Department replaced more than 30,000 legacy single-function printers with fewer than 8,200 Xerox multi- function devices, which, where necessary, are capable of printing, copying, faxing and scanning and are Energy Star-rated.

In addition to cutting electricity consumption by 63%, the new fleet gave DWP staff capacity to have scanning facilities at every site in the Department if needed. Default double-sided printing also helped save paper and money. Calls to the help desk have nearly halved, and there has been a 90 percent reduction in the number of site visits by engineers to deal with faulty printers. Julie Hesselgrove, director and general manager,

Global Document Outsourcing, said: “Part of this initiative has involved introducing a sustainable print service through which Xerox has streamlined the department’s print environment, provided cost-savings and met sustainability objectives, so DWP can continue to focus on transforming its services for UK citizens.” Now in its second year, the Green IT Awards are run by Green IT Magazine and aim to showcase and reward companies that have made a significant contribution to improving the IT industry’s environmental performance over the last 12 months.

Xerox has been a partner to the U.K. government and public sector for more than 35 years. In late 2010, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cabinet Office to deliver savings to HM Government as part of the Efficiency Reform Group’s deficit-reduction progamme. Xerox provides technology, document management and business process outsourcing to DWP as well as other public sector clients such as Worcester NHS Trust, Manchester City Council, Scottish Police Services Authority and Kirklees Council. www.xerox.co.uk

This prestigious Framework Agreement contract has been awarded to Stark by Scottish Procurement, the central buying agency for the public sector in Scotland. organisations to easily identify any leaks or other forms of water wastage. With this daily feedback, organisations can then start to bring about behaviour change, so that individuals can take action to use water less wastefully.

“And, importantly, once organisations can accurately measure water usage against site occupancy, they can start to put water management procedures in place, such as tap restrictors and urinal controls, in order to save water and reduce bills. The fourth benefit of AMR is that we will provide water suppliers with monthly meter reads, so they can send bills based on actual usage rather than on estimates.” Email: office@stark.co.uk

HOME OFFICE ROLLS OUT PIONEERING ENERGY CONTRACTS DEVELOPED BY AMEY AND BRITISH GAS The Home Office is rolling out energy management contracts pioneered by Amey and British Gas Business (BGB) across 90 per cent of its estate, after the two

department £212,000 in eight months. Working in a three-way partnership, Amey, BGB and the Home Office developed a ‘payment by results’ energy management contract to manage energy consumption across 350 Home Office- managed buildings in London and The South East. It was the first time the Gain Share method had been used for energy management in Central Government. For three years, Amey and BGB assess the condition of existing equipment; invest in new energy systems and encourage users to reduce consumption. They are on track to save the Home Office more than £1.3 million and cut its carbon footprint by 15 per cent over the lifetime of the contract.

Based on that success, the
