disembodied head—an artistic rendering of Bobby Fischer that oddly could have just as easily been mistaken for his opponent, Boris Spassky—a sort of giant, encased brain. Chancellor did indeed defer the world-shaping news of Nixon’s imploding pres- idency that day to report the outcome of the 21st and final game of the 1972 match that brought the Cold War chess champi- onship home from Iceland to the United States.
