EXECUTIVE NOTES By Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director
SUMMERTIME IS A BUSY TIME FOR USA WRESTLING Wrestling is a year-round sport in the United States, and the summer months are no exception. The saying is that summer wrestlers become winter champions, and USA Wrestling is busy providing quality competition at all age-levels during the summer months. In early June, there was a great celebration of wrestling when
the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Honors Week and the U.S. World Team Trials were held back-to-back in Oklahoma. The very best of wrestling from the past and the present were on display and both activities were a huge success. The World Team Trials provided 17 athletes for our 2011 U.S.
World Teams which will compete at the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. The final three women’s team members and the 60 kg men’s freestyle team were determined in July. Based upon the level of wrestling at the World Team Trials, we are very optimistic about quality of our World Teams that will compete in Turkey. This is a very important event because it is the first qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games. Our nation’s best wrestlers will train this summer in preparation for success. We will also be sending U.S. World Teams to compete at the FILA Junior World Championships in Romania in late July and the FILA Cadet World Championships in Hungary in late August. Our developmental coaches will be working with these talented young athletes to prepare for these events. We also have high hopes for these young wrestlers who will represent our nation at the World level. Traditionally, the highlight of the summer season is the annual ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. in July. Our state associations are putting together teams of tal- ented wrestlers for this traditional extravaganza, and we are looking forward to many great performances there. In June, we were pleased to host National Dual Meet Championships on the Junior, Cadet and Schoolboy levels. These events continue to be popular, giving many of our nation’s top young competitors a chance to display their skills and compete for state pride.

-Season Preparation andTra ning for A l Ages or Alll Ages GOLD MEDAL TRAINING CAMP SYSTEM Among the other summer activities are
the Kids National Greco-Roman and Freestyle Championships, the Beach Nationals and the Grappling World Team Trials. It is a great season for wrestling. USA Wrestling’s volunteer leaders will
come together in August at the USA Wrestling Board of Directors meeting and the annual State Leaders Summit, which will be hosted in Oklahoma City. Decisions will be made on the direction of the organization and plans for the programs which we provide to our members. I would like to thank all of our volunteer leaders for their hard work, dedication, leadership and service to their sport.
WRESTLING ALLIANCE SEEKS TO IMPACT FUTURE In June, it was announced that USA Wrestling, the National
Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame are forming a Wrestling Alliance for a cooperative, uni- fied effort on behalf of the sport. Its mission is to protect, promote, and strengthen wrestling in
the United States, with particular focus on high school and colle- giate wrestling opportunities for young men and women. We are committed to joining forces with these outstanding organizations to strengthen our planet’s greatest sport. We all have a significant responsibility to work together for the greater good of wrestling. We are confident that this Alliance will serve our sport well and we work hard to eliminate duplication of efforts and create efficiencies to move wrestling forward. This will not be an easy task. However, everybody recognizes
that wrestling’s survival and growth on the high school and col- lege levels are critical to wrestling’s success on every level. I truly believe that we need to have a cooperative effort on the key issues that we face in order to best serve our sport. In the future, the Alliance could include other organizations
and could focus on other important topics. We encourage feed- back from the wrestling community as we move forward togeth- er. I will report on the progress made by the Alliance in future columns in USA Wrestler.
