different than other successful programs with active freestyle clubs. “We looked at the place, the area, the support that we get from alumni for the club under Coach Lorenzo’s leadership and who plays a big role here,” Cody Sanderson said. “It’s two dif- ferent things. We are providing an opportunity for Penn State wrestlers to move on, and we are helping the Olympic move- ment and our country by providing opportunities for people to train and get medals.” USA Wrestling has designated State College a Regional

Training Center. Wrestlers from nearby clubs frequently visit State College for training stints. State College’s allure as a freestyle destination is poised to increase. Cael Sanderson, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist,

you enjoyed visiting the most? Stevens: The travel itself is not fun. Usually, I get to see the airport, the hotel and the arena. People will ask why I don’t stay longer before or after the tournament. When it is really busy in wrestling, there’s not time to do it. I have traveled from one tour- nament to the next without going home. I have a wonderful house and cat sitter at home.

When I travel I like to read. I have time to prepare for events and catch up on reading. I can’t sightsee most of the time. I was working the National High Schools in Virginia Beach for three years before I ever saw the beach. They drove me down to the beach just to say I saw the beach. There is a beach in Virginia Beach.

recently returned to competition, winning the Northeast Regional in Brockport, N.Y. and World Team Trials. Sanderson said he will determine his 2012 plans after the

World Championships. Sanderson might be club’s busiest athlete, juggling training with his responsibilities as Penn State’s head coach. Sanderson, who turned 32 in June, spends considerable time in the Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, giving Anspach, Varner and Wright a relentless training partner.

“The big picture is providing them an opportunity to really

attack their goals,” Sanderson said. “They don’t understand how great they have it here because they don’t know any different. But this is very unique.” Guy Cipriano covers Penn State and high school wrestling for the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.

your work which has been rewarding to you? Stevens: It’s rewarding when people tell me I help them understand what is happening. They are often new to the sport. I know if they understand that they will get hooked. What has meant a lot is when wrestlers tell me that my voice made a dif- ference. At National High Schools several years ago, a woman came up and asked me if I was the announcer in Fargo. Her son was a state champion but was nervous about this event. He walked in, heard my voice, and said it would be OK. A reporter in California said he listened to some coaches talk-

ing. There was a coach who won the state championship as a wrestler during my second year working the event. After that first year, he used the sound of my voice in his head to motivate him to become a state champion and hear me announce his name. That moves me to tears. I am so blessed to be in that position.
