Arthur Beaudet, MD, chair of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He is one of 72 new members and 18 foreign associates from 15 countries elected to the academy in recognition of their dis- tinguished and continuing achievements in original research.


Gov. Rick Perry reappointed Kirk Aquilla Calhoun, MD, president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, to the State Health Services Council. The council makes recommendations to the Texas Department of State Health Services on the management, operation, policies, and rules for public health, mental health, and substance abuse.


Gov. Rick Perry reappointed Maryann Choi, MD, of Georgetown, to the Health and Human Services Council. The council assists in devel- oping policies and rules for the Health and Human Services Commis- sion. Dr. Choi is chief medical officer of Harden Healthcare and an as- sistant professor at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center.


John C. Jennings, MD, is the new vice president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Dr. Jennings is the regional dean and a professor of obstetrics-gynecology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) at the Permian Basin campus in Odessa, and chair of the Texas Medicine Editorial Board. Dr. Jennings is a founder of the multicampus Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health at TTUHSC. Dr. Jennings received an ACOG Outstanding District Service Award this year.


Alvin “Lee” Schlichtemeier, MD, of Plano, is one of five people Gov. Rick Perry appointed to the Texas Board of Licensure for Profession- al Medical Physicists. The board regulates the practice of medical physics in Texas. Dr. Schlichtemeier is a radiation oncologist for Bra- zos Radiation Oncology PA and medical director of the St. Joseph’s Regional Cancer Center Radiation Oncology Department.


San Antonio orthopedic surgeon David R. Schmidt, MD, is the new chair of the Valero Alamo Bowl’s Board of Directors. A board mem- ber since 1993, Dr. Schmidt has been in private practice since 1986 and currently serves as the team physician for the San Antonio Spurs, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, and many local high schools.

prevailed over Lyle S. Thorstenson, MD, nominated by the Small District Caucus. David Teuscher, MD, endorsed Dr. Thor- stenson’s experience, knowledge of the issues affecting medicine, proven leader- ship, and effectiveness as a spokesman for physicians. “Lyle understands the practice viabil-


ity pressures before physicians. His state and national health policy experience have prepared him to lead as president of TMA,” Dr. Teuscher said in his nomi- nation speech.

and former TMA Trustee congratulated Dr. Speer on his victory and declared, “This is farewell but not good-bye.” Dr. Speer, a neonatal-perinatal medi- cine specialist, has a long history of service to TMA. He was a member of the TMA Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2010 and board chair from 2009 to 2010. He was chair of the board’s Com- mittee on Physician Performance and chair of the TMA Council on Scientific Affairs. He also was the TMA representa- tive to the TMF Health Quality Institute and this past year held the position of vice chair of TMA’s Ad Hoc Committee on Accountable Care Organizations.
