NEWS Screening trial prompts UU purchase

United Utilities (UU) has purchased nine Elevator

integrated screen

and screens handling units from Longwood Engineering. The units were specifically developed for small works – up to 100l/s – and provides the ideal solution where there is no wash water supply. Fully tested at the National Screens Evaluation Facility in Chester-le-Street, says

Longwood the Elevator has achieved

an unprecedented capture ratio of 76%. Longwood says it can be tailored to suit individual requirements or easily retro-fitted into existing channels.

Steve Catte, United Utilities

wastewater & biosolids standards manager said: “UU provided a small works site at Horton-in-Ribblesdale for the trial of Longwood Engineering’s Elevator screen. Working collaboratively, the local UU Process Operations and Longwood monitored the screen performance over a 12-month period.

“The trial proved such a success – due to the efficiency and reliability of the unit, which eliminated pump blockages, together with improvements in sludge quality – that UU not only purchased the trial unit, but also purchased a further eight units for other UU small works sites.”
