elcome to a special issue of Carnegie Mech. In this edition, we are excited to share news about our new International Service-Learning Engineering (ISLE) initiative, which is highlighted in our feature article. The ISLE initiative was created to build on our existing study-abroad program
by linking MechE students with hands-on service opportunities in another corner of the world. By sending our young engineers to areas where their skills are most needed, we hope to not only provide global hands-on learning opportunities—but also allow them to make a lasting impact on others. Our students may become familiar with engineering theory and research here at
Carnegie Mellon, but it is an entirely different experience to confront the formidable engineering challenges that exist in other parts of the world. By immersing our students in other cultures—and presenting them with practical, real-world challenges—we hope to add immeasurably to their engineering education. In May, our first ISLE delegation traveled to the Philippines to teach engineering
concepts and rebuild homes (see pages 3–5). The feedback from this visit has been overwhelmingly positive, both from participants and the people whose lives were directly impacted. I hope to continue to share news about this new opportunity, and I welcome any alumni or friends of MechE who wish to become involved in future ISLE efforts. Our alumni profile on pages 10–11 also focuses on philanthropy and the rare

gift of “giving back.” Our featured alumnus, Donald Struminger, has not only achieved incredible career success, but also has consistently focused on philanthropy, whether he is supporting MechE, Carnegie Mellon, local hospitals, community and religious organizations, or children’s charities. I cannot think of a better role model for our young engineers. Our Student News (pages 6–9), Alumni News (pages 12–13), and Faculty News
(pages 14–18) sections are filled with additional great news about the achieve- ments of the MechE community. I believe you will be amazed by the number of awards and competitions won recently by our faculty and students, as well as the latest successes of our graduates. Along with our growing global educational efforts, these personal success
stories of faculty, students, and alumni continue to shine a positive light on the entire MechE family—of which you are a valued member. I hope you will enjoy seeing all that we have accomplished recently, and that you will continue to share your own achievements with us for future editions of Carnegie Mech.•
