Regional Data Initiative:
Example after example from the educators we brought in were based on going deeper into student learning, a deeper dive made available by a regional data warehouse. In that instant, the Regional Data Initiatives were born. When the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) doubled Title IID technology funding, the Department finally had the significant resources necessary to fund the next push for data driven decision-making. We set an audacious goal of providing real- time data for every classroom teacher in Michigan.
I thought I had a good understanding of what constitutes data driven decision-making when I joined the Michigan Department of Education. Coming to MDE from a data rich, Math/Science Partnership and after reading the Michigan State Educational Technology Plan, I thought everyone in K-12 education had a firm grasp on making instruc tional decisions using data. Then I had my first official meeting: the kick-off for the Data for Student Success project, which became a four- year odyssey that opened my mind to the challenges of getting state data in actionable formats and into the hands of front-line educators. The experience has convinced me that state-level data is much more meaningful for classroom teachers and building leaders when matched with local school and classroom assessments and information.
The light came on when presenting the progress made by Data for Student Success to the State Board of Education.
