2010 Review

2010 did not begin favorably for Siena water polo. A 1-9 start for the Saints included four losses to top-20 teams and a win over Mercyhurst by just one goal. However, coach Ellen Howe and the Saints turned it around, finishing the season with just the program’s second-ever appearance in the MAAC Tournament.

After the rocky start, Siena showed promise in their next three tournaments. The Saints won seven of their next 11 games, including two at the 2010 Siena Invitational and three of four at Michigan. Even in losses, it appeared as if Siena was a different team, with two defeats coming in overtime against quality competition. It seemed as though the Saints were beginning to catch fire.

However, the next month or so would be a long one for Siena. The Saints lost eight of ten matchups, including seven by five goals or more. Siena was on the verge of missing the MAAC Tournament and heading into April 18th’s doubleheader in Staten Island, the Saints needed a sweep of Villanova and St. Francis (N.Y.) to ensure a trip to the promised land.

The Saints came out strong, throttling Villanova 14-8, after building a 6-0 lead in the first period. This put

huge implications on the afternoon game against St. Francis, one that went back and forth after Siena erased a 5-2 first-period deficit. Not surprisingly, the game went to overtime, with both teams tied at 13 after 32 minutes of play.

After both teams put up zeroes in the first overtime period, it was junior Molly Chamberlain who was the hero, scoring her ninth goal of the season to clinch a MAAC Tournament berth. In a season of ups and downs for the Saints, this represented a team that had come full circle after a disappointing start.

A MAAC title was not in the cards, though, as the Saints dropped postseason games against Marist and Wagner. Still, Siena showed promise, and their efforts did not go unnoticed around the conference. Camille Norman, who set a new program record for points in a season with 133, was an All-MAAC First Team selection and Jackie Crosby was a Second Team selec- tion after tallying 96 points of her own.
