James Brocket Managing Partner – Europe

Interestingly, the number of investments is substantially down in every major territory, including the US.

Venture capital in Europe is wrestling with some major structural challenges and this results in a particularly difficult market for A and B rounds. Many early-stage VCs of old are now ‘Growth’ investors – leaving relatively few VCs focused on earlier stage companies.

It is interesting to note that even with the free flow of venture funding in the US there is a c. 20% decline in the number of investments in Q1 2011. There are far fewer A and B rounds closing here also, and this is likely to impact in the future.
