Scott MacGregor MacGregor is the founder and publisher of Canoeroots and the host of his latest project, Rapid Media TV. In this issue’s Family Camping Basecamp column he remembers Saturday morning drives with his father. Charlotte Jacklein Well-traveled outdoor educator and guide Jack- lein spent the last two summers leading canoe trips in the Yukon. It wasn’t easy for her to whit- tle a list of northern river dream trips down to just five (“Way up North,” page 17), but Jacklein doesn’t hesitate when asked her favorite: “The
Wind River’s wildlife encounters—black bears, bull moose, fox kits, caribou and grizzly.”
Kit Cross Cross is a freelance writer, global nomad, tour boat captain and canoeist. With hobbies as di- verse as flying hang gliders, learning Swahili, gardening and riding motorcycles, she says she’s interested in pretty much everything. Researching her report “Migration Sensation” (page 19) was “a blast,” says Cross. “I’m keen on anthropology, ancient peoples and boats.”
Robert Faubert Longtime contributing photographer Faubert canoes and shoots the rivers of Quebec and eastern Ontario when he isn’t at his day job, snapping photos for the federal government.
His subject in this issue (Canoescapes, page 14) exemplifies why he paddles. “I think we all could learn a thing or two from these quiet, unhurried creatures—to just take a break, step back and slow down from our hectic daily routines.”
Kevin Callan Author of 13 books on paddling and wilder- ness travel, Butt End columnist Callan enjoys nothing more than unwinding in a canoe. Sometimes, however, these wilderness so- journs aren’t so relaxing (“Party Crasher,” page 54). “A Cree elder once told me that bears are attracted to my campsite more than usual because the bear is my spirit,” Callan laments. “I asked if I could change my spirit to a chipmunk or bunny—he just smiled and walked away.”
