After three years in the hot seat, Rapid senior editor Marshall knows that investigative reporting means asking pointed questions. But blindsiding celebrities—like four-time World Champion Eric Jackson for “Stacking the Deck” (page 17)—she says, “still makes me nervous.”
BEN MARR
One of the sport’s best big wave freestyle boaters, Marr shares his expertise in “Freestyle’s Toughest Moves” (page 30). After a month of boating and filming in China, he headed for northern Alberta to make some coin in the oil patch. Learning he’d been selected for the Whitewater Grand Prix (page 19), Marr says, “I put minus 51-degree nights in my rearview to come home to the Ottawa Valley and train.”
JEFF JACKSON
Alchemy and River 411 columnist Jackson has been a Rapid contributor since our very first issue. In 13 years he has written many times about issues facing everybody else’s rivers, but now it is his home river that is under threat (Alchemy, page 18). Jackson says, “It’s so hard to articulate something that is so close to me. It’s hard to get past my anger about the whole thing.”
MAXI KNIEWASSER
Not many boaters can brag about a season as jam-packed as the one Kniewasser wrapped up this winter. In 2010, he paddled the Homathko River, Triple Crown (Stikine, Susitna and Alsek rivers), Grand Canyon and Africa’s Zambezi and Nile rivers. Kniewasser writes about redemption on the Stikine on page 34. He says of his first time on the legendary river, “I had moments where I didn’t think we were going to make it out.”
BETH KENNEDY
Equally talented on a Mac and on the river, Kennedy is Rapid’s designer and a decorated open canoe slalom racer. When she’s not making beautiful magazines or keeping the open side up (“Brace Yourself,” page 25), Kennedy can be found elbow- deep in the gardens of her 120-year-old homestead in the Ottawa Valley.
