2010 Review

After missing out on the MAAC Tournament the previous four seasons, the Saints returned to the promised land in 2010. Siena posted its second most wins ever in advancing to the conference tournament for just the second time in the program’s 14-year history.

The Saints wasted little time in asserting themselves as a team to be reckoned with. Right off the bat, the Saints blasted Presbyterian 21-13, setting a record for the most goals scored in a game in program history. They added 14 more tallies a week later in a win vs. Bryant as the offense continued to erupt.

Caitlin Mikel played a huge role in the offensive success of the team early and often. In those first two games alone, she was out of this world, recording a whopping 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists. It would be an omen of more good things to come.

The Saints raced out to a 4-2 start on the season – their only losses coming against national powers Boston College and UAlbany. But as is true with any team, the Saints would then face some adversity. Siena lost its next four in a row, including its first MAAC game, and needed a spark to rebound. Once again it would come in the name of Caitlin Mikel.

The junior attack scored 12 goals in wins over Manhattan and Iona as the Saints picked up their first conference victories in two years and repositioned themselves into the heart of the MAAC Tournament race.

A win one week later over Niagara would punch the Saints’ ticket to the MAAC Tournament for the first time since 2005.

With a matchup in the regular-season finale against MAAC semifinals foe and regular-season champion Fairfield, the Saints showed they could hang with the Stags, taking them to the wire in Connecticut before falling 10-9.

It would set up a highly-anticipated rematch a week later in Poughkeepsie between the fourth-seeded Saints and top-seeded Stags, but this time Fairfield’s experi- ence paid off as Siena’s season came to an abrupt end in the semifinals.
