CHARITY SWIMS SWIM FOR GOOD
Every issue we share the stories of just some of the people who use their passion for swimming to benefi t good causes…
CHANNELING POSITIVITY Raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Justine Drury, a teacher at South Nottingham College, and Kate Vines, a part- time crafts student, are attempting a team crossing of the English Channel. “I’m rapidly approaching 40, wanted to give something back and at the same time wrap it into a tough personal challenge,” says Drury. “I remember seeing a picture of a Channel swimmer in the Guinness Book of Records back in 1979 or 1980 and I told my mum, ‘one day I’m going to do that’, so here I am.” The duo currently swim 5km fi ve- mornings per week, under the guidance of top age-group triathlete and coach, Nick Dunn. “Even just doing the training is tough, especially on top of the job and looking after my two children, aged four and six,” says Drury. “But it’s great to be doing it in a team and having Kate’s support.” Even though they’re doing it together, a team crossing isn’t easy. In a two-man relay, each member swims for an hour at a time, and the constant cycle of warming up and jumping back into the cold water can be very draining. Drury says her biggest fear is not fi nishing. “You hear many stories of people being pulled out when their in sight of the other side but the tide has turned against them. That would just be heartbreaking.”

FIT FOR HEROES The second largest lake in the Lake District, Lake Ullswater, will see some serious money-raising action this August as triathlete Simon Hearnshaw (uncle of the British Brownlee brothers) is organising several swims to raise funds for the Help The Heroes charity. They plan to assemble three groups of swimmers – one to swim the lake in one direction, a group of relay swimmers to swim both ways, and a smaller group to attempt the return swim.
The club is also organising several open water swims to get people ready for the challenge. Anyone interested in helping or participating should email:
