THE BIG DEBATE ∆ P21

Nicola Joyce is an open- water swimmer who has swum the English Channel twice as a solo swimmer and once as part of a

two-way relay team. Her swimming CV includes a circumnavigation of Jersey and up Lake Windermere. In this issue, she hosts the classic open-water debate: is true open water swimming done with or without a wetsuit?

SECOND SKIN ∆ P44

A keen swimmer and triathlete, Dan Bullock has been coaching since 1990, helping thousands get fitter and faster.

Dan held the title of National Masters Champion, both in the pool and open water, and has been a European Masters Medallist and a Double-Ironman finisher. His sessions are a great mixture of skill, motivation and amenability.

WELCOME TO H2OPEN MAGAZINE

We’ve devoted a lot of space to wetsuits this issue, starting with our “Big Debate” (page 21), where

we ask two leading open water swimmers to share their views on this contentious topic. Whichever side of the debate you support, none of us can escape the fact that many race organisers insist on wetsuits, primarily for safety reasons. There’s also not much doubt that swimming with a wetsuit is faster than without. We therefore decided to try and find out just how much difference a top-end wetsuit can make to your swimming speed, and how much difference there is between brands (page 48). We also investigate the technology and history behind swimming wetsuits (page 46) and finally answer the age-old question about the right way to get into one (page 44). While people (both with and without wetsuits) take on open water swimming challenges for personal reasons, many often use the sport as a means to raise money for good causes. In fact, when the going gets tough – either in training or during the actual event – having an external cause to swim for can make the difference between sticking it out and giving up. A number of charities have a long history of involvement in open water swimming. This issue therefore sees the launch of a new section in the magazine devoted to charities (page 60). If you have a story to share about your fundraising efforts through swimming, we’d love to hear from you. You don’t have to be tackling the longest, coldest or hardest swim in the world, as long as it's a tough personal challenge for a good cause. Happy reading!
