Youth Quad Report

Story by: Mark Williams Photos by: Joe Colombero

When a WORCS youth rider looks at the calendar and sees round 3 Lake Havasu, it brings about both excitement and anxiety. Visions of spring break, and playing on the beach, are often over- shadowed by bunker sized sand whoops, and frame bending boulders.

Getting refueled after a hard day of racing.

The 8-15 Sport class is one of the last classes of the day, so track conditions are always at their worst. Out of the 21 entries, only 15 were able to find the finish. Buddy Williams took the holeshot, but was quickly overtaken by #88 Tyler Beck- man. Beckman’s lead was short lived however as he destroyed the front suspension and was hurled off the bike. Beckman was unhurt, and his brother Travis inherited the lead. The younger Beckman took the win, followed by Dale Salazar jr, and Todd Mick jr.

#14 P Trent Adams heads to the Start Line.

The course itself is short by WORCS standards, but is well known as being the roughest on the circuit. The low ground clearance and short wheel base combination of the typical mini-quad punish even the fittest of the youth racers. Typically a conservative set-up with a smart rider is key to victory in Havasu. Those willing to push the lim- its of their machine and riding skills are destined for a ride behind a utility quad attached to a tow strap.

These Mini-Racers are in a serious position battle.

As an avid long time fan of mini-quad racing, it is a pleasure for me to watch the transition from throttle blipping, jump rolling, mini rider to “get out of my way” high flyin mini pilot. One mini ace who recently made this transition is #224 Kyler Thau out of Chico, CA. Thau has been tear- ing it up on the track as of late. I watched the young Thau mixin it up with the older kids in Fri- day practice, and certainly getting his money’s worth. Thau proved his point on Saturday , by winning the 90cc Stock class, placing 4th in 8-15 Sport, and a 5th in 70 Stock on Sunday.

Next month the tour enters friendlier territory, on a traditional outdoor motocross style venue that is the Cahuilla Creek Mx facility in Anza, on Easter weekend.
