Gone Canoeing
by Kevin Callan Gone Canoeing is Kevin Callan’s latest guidebook to canoeing Ontario’s lakes and rivers. The book features twenty routes that are easily accessible to paddlers in the Southern Ontario area. Callan’s selection of trips range from almost-wild places you’ve probably never heard about to familiar loca- tions you might not have considered as a canoeing destination. The underlying theme to all the routes is soft adventure where the one to three day routes are friendly and the portages gentle.

This book follows the style of Kevin Callan’s other guides introducing each route with a brief story. The dialogue is witty and entertain- ing usually touching on historical or cultural aspects of the area combined with a tale or two about one of his many personal adven- tures or mishaps. Callan has an uncanny abili- ty to discover the best places to put in and take out including great spots to explore along the way. The details are described in the text but also organised into a handy chart at the end of each section.
Gone Canoeing includes a detailed map of
each route clearly indicating the major and minor roads, put-ins and take-outs, nearby
towns and notes on specific points of interest for each particular trip. The only thing that would make it a little easier to locate the spe- cific routes would be a map giving an overview of the entire area covered by the book. The guide concludes with a section on outdoor cooking cuisine that includes a selec- tion of classic over-the-fire recipes. All in all Gone Canoeing introduces us to a great col- lection of trips from lazy day floats to more adventurous weekend getaways perfect for a quick paddling fix for everyone in the family. $19.95 Boston Mills Press

Sometimes i’
ts just getting home.
In 30+ years of racing domi- nance we’ve collected more than trophies. We’ve amassed knowl- edge. Experience. Confidence. We’ve learned how to build the qualities that win races – efficien- cy, seaworthiness, predictability – into every canoe we make. The end result? We craft the most capable, most dependable canoes you can buy.
Sure, we still like crossing the finish line first. But that can’t touch the satisfaction of getting you to your destination. And safely home again.
