Performance Paddlers who gravitate to the performance canoe enjoy hours of

straight-ahead hard paddling. The pleasure of getting into the groove, logging kilometre after kilometre is at the heart of perform- ance paddling. While these folks may not actually compete in races, fitness paddling is often part of their routine. Most performance paddlers are experienced and appreciate the edginess of a quick, fast boat. Going on lightweight, medium distance trips may also be part of some performance pad- dlers’ season. These paddlers are looking for a boat that will move quickly and efficiently through the water without the need for constant correction strokes. Performance boats combine all the elements of canoe design that maximise forward speed. The elements that con- tribute to a fast canoe are length (most measuring in at seventeen feet or longer),and minimum rocker to maximise the waterline and tracking. Most performance hulls are asymmetrical with very sharp

entry lines at the bow with little flare. They are narrow and the bot- toms are likely the most rounded of any canoeing category making them less stable but with very little drag.Performance boats are sel- dom deep—excessive freeboard increases weight and the effects of wind.Performance canoes that seem to have an almost flat gunwale or sheer line.To help increase forward stroke efficiency many per- formance boat designs incorporate plenty of tumblehome. Performance boats are some of the most expensive canoes because they tend to use the lightest and most rigid composite materials. These materials also allow designers to create the boats with very sharp entry and exit angles at the bow and stern. Outfitting depends very much on the canoes intended use. Recreational performance

paddlers outfit their canoes much the same way as lakewater trip- pers, whereas more dedicated racing paddlers have very specialised rigging to ensure there is full transfer of a paddlers energy to mov- ing the canoe forward through the water.
