WORDSfromReaders Deer Island New Brunswick
I recently purchased two kayaks and obtained a copy of your Premier Issue. I would like to com- pliment you on a fine magazine. As a newbie to kayaking, I found it readable and informative. I was pleasantly surprised (although not really) to find a story about Grand Manan. Although Grand Manan certainly has the publicity (and tourists), as a resident of Deer Island I am arguably biased. I am in no way involved in the tourist industry and certainly do not mean to belit- tle the merits of Grand Manan, however let me inform your readers of the following: Deer Island is a 20 minute ride from the mainland and is the largest of about 45 islands which comprise the parish of West Isles. It has been shortlisted by Parks Canada as one of several possible sites for a future marine park. All the features of Grand Manan (birding, whale watching, camping, etc.) may be found here, often more reasonably and more easily accessible. Kayak outfitters such as Kayak Cove (
www.kayakcove.com) offer all the amenities described in your article. I enjoy your magazine and look forward to the
next issue.

Women’s Paddling Group
I have been a subscriber of your magazine ever since the very first issue. You have come a long, long way and I am always looking forward to each issue.
I have been organizing a women’s only pad- dling club that will serve as an avenue for female paddlers to have contact with other women who share the same interest. It is a good opportunity for us girls to get to know each other, plan and organize tours or paddling events and just have our own space.
I am still quite a novice and enjoy mostly recre- ational kayaking but the club is open to all levels and all types of paddling. Once a month we get together to meet the newest members and plan some social or water-related outings. The club is based in Toronto but the monthly meetings rotate to members' homes. email canoekayak@cana-

Good Judgement and Seamanship
In his thought-provoking essay, Rock the Boat [Summer 2002] John Dowd wrote, “There's some- thing awry in the sea kayaking world these days. The problem is the gradual divergence between what is taught or not taught in sea kayaking
