In poor taste? When I read Alex Matthews’ article “Strate- gies to Score” (V3 I3) I thought that it had to be a send-up of that kind of article— tongue-in-
cheek. But after this last issue (photo: “Piss parade at the Old Whaling
Station…”, V4 I1) I’m thinking that maybe scoring with the babes and peeing on the beach really is what you guys are all about. Maybe Adventure Kayak is written primarily by young males for a certain young male culture. Being neither young nor male, I might have just wandered into the wrong readership. However, I want to point out that a lot of women are on the water. So if you do happen to be interested in appealing to more of us, how about articles by some of the Canadian women who must surely be out there exploring wilderness, running whitewater, leading trips, going solo?

We’re committed to representing our sport in all its diversity while trying to have some fun along the way. If our aim is a little off, we count on readers to keep us on our toes. But in this case you’ve got us all wrong. We editors are pushing our mid-30s and have expanding bellies and receding hairlines to prove it. And 60 percent of our readership is over 40. Notice the grey hairs on those guys in the photo?
We love this photo because it shows something essential about the kayaking experience that every passionate paddler can relate to. Besides, it could have been worse (see photos above).
There is also a deeper truth here. The photo shows four men—unless the women are hiding in the bushes. That’s sadly accurate because only one out of five of our readers are female. We don’t like it that way. We print articles by women or about women in every issue. Our most recent profile was about a woman, Audrey Sutherland, which ran alongside Alex Matthews’ obviously self-deprecat- ing jab at male chauvinism in V3 I3. But we can always do better. Consider this an invitation to contribute your own stories and photos, or suggest some women you’d like to see profiled. You’ll find our contributor guidelines online at
