OSU Energy Center achieves LEED Platinum
Portland, ore. — oregon State University’s (oSU) energy Center is the first university-based cogeneration plant in the U.S. to achieve leed (leadership in energy and environmental design) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Heery International served as commissioning agent for
the $55 million plant, which replaced a failing 90-year-old steam plant. the new energy Center will allow the uni- versity to generate approximately 50 percent of its elec- tricity on-site, which should result in an annual savings of $650,000. the plant can also operate on a variety of liquid and fuel gas sources, including bio-fuels. this affords the university flexibility in choosing the lowest-cost fuel as market conditions change, and to use locally produced bio-fuels as they become available.

fayettevIlle, ark. — Increasing regulation and a new focus on efficiency are turning the water market into one of the hottest commodities for engineering firms, the Zweig letter discovers. a reinvigorated focus on water conservation, new sup-
ply sources and water efficiency installations throughout the U.S. are opening up major new business opportunities for consulting engineering firms beyond the traditional water/wastewater storage, treatment and conveyance sys- tems. also, a difficult funding environment in Washington, d.C., will force players in the market to come up with innovative solutions. engineers are being called upon to be creative with
their designs as public agencies are looking at new approaches and solutions for integrated water system management, which combines water conservation pricing and regulation with utilization of new water sources such as stormwater, graywater and blackwater on-site water recovery and reuse, desalination, reclaimed sewage and massive fixture retrofits. for more info,
