Regal Canoes Returned Royal Family loans three canoes to museum
“YOU KNOW, I could still portage that,” said Prince Andrew to no one in particular as he let his fin- gers trail off the bow of his cedar strip canoe, the one that had just become part of a museum display. Tere were a few smiles in the
retinue following him, but no one dared him to throw the canoe over his shoulders. Te Prince was in Peterbor-
ough, Ontario, in May to pres- ent the Canadian Canoe Museum with three canoes that had been given to the Royal Family during the last six decades. Prince Andrew told the 200

people attending the dedication how he had come across the ca- noes in storage at Windsor Castle and decided they would be better appreciated in the museum. In arranging for their long-term loan, he had to acquire some royal
assent, since only one of the ca- noes is his. Te eldest, which fea- tures vertical tongue and groove cedar planks, was built by the Peterborough Canoe Company in 1948 for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Te third canoe was built by Ted Moores and given to Prince Charles and Diana, Prin- cess of Wales, by Pierre Trudeau. Of the three, it was likely Prince
Andrew’s canoe that saw the most use. Te Village of Lakefield com- missioned Walter Walker to build the canoe when the Prince was at- tending Lakefield College School as a teenager. After asking the museum to
please take care of the canoes, the Prince admitted that although he had once capsized the canoe, it had been his bowsman’s fault. —Ian Merringer
