Employee Spotlight: John Stephens WHO I AM:
I am the Gear & Equipment buyer here at DB. I worked at the old store for three years in the mid ’90s and have been here full time since 2004.
WHERE I PLAY: I love being in the mountains, enjoying them on two wheels or underground in a cave.
WHY I DO IT: Being outside recharges me... going on a trip in the woods makes everything better!
FIRST OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES: I went to Falling Creek Camp for the first time when I was 10. I spent three summers there as a kid and five as a counselor. A month long Outward Bound course in high school sealed the deal, and I’ve been in love with being outside since.
MOST MEMORABLE OUTDOOR EXCURSION: I recently became a volunteer doing trail maintenance with the Carolina Mountain Club along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Volunteering and giving back to what I enjoy doing gives me immense satisfaction!
FAVORITE PIECE OF GEAR: I’m proud to admit that I have a daypack fetish. My favorites right now are the Osprey Raptor 14 and the Mountain Hardwear Fluid 26.
POST-TRAIL HANGOUT: There is nothing more relaxing than sitting outside at The Lucky Otter and watching Asheville go by...
