GOOGLE PLANS 1,000 NEW JOBS FOR EUROPE
500 NEW DIGITAL ECONOMY JOBS AT PADDY POWER
Online gaming company Paddy Power is to generate 500 new jobs in Ireland as part of a major expansion of its online operations. The company said this will bring total employment in its Irish op- erations to 2,210. Internationally, Paddy Power’s expan-
sion will generate a total of 1,440 new jobs in Ireland, Australia and the UK. In what can be a clear indication to Ireland’s policymakers of the kind of gains that can be made if Ireland fully embraced the digital economy, 375 of the new jobs will be located at Paddy Power’s online operations in Tallaght. Of the 500 new jobs being created in Ireland, 375 will be located in Tallaght, in areas such as e-commerce, technol- ogy, quantitative research, online mar- keting and risk management. Paddy Power’s international online turnover has grown by 315pc in the last three years and the group’s strategy is to ex- ploit additional new opportunities that arise as international markets libera- lise. A further 125 jobs will be created in
Paddy Power’s retail estate in Ireland. These new jobs are on top of 725 existing ‘smart economy’ jobs in Paddy Power’s Tallaght head office, 80 of which have been created and filled in the past 12 months.
Google’s outgoing CEO Eric Schmidt recently announced Google will be creating 1,000 new jobs in Europe, split evenly between sales and engineer- ing. Google in Dublin currently has 221 vacancies. Google already employs around 1,500 people in Dublin and last year announced a further 200 positions in a new operations centre. The new Dublin-based operations centre will be focused on the search engine giant’s location-based products, including Google Local and Google Maps. A spokesperson for Google said the new jobs will be spread across the entire European region, where Google already employs 5,000 people. She explained that the jobs will be
split evenly between engineering and sales and pointed out that Google is currently recruiting in Dublin. Schmidt told the DLD Conference
in Germany that Google will be adding 1,000 new employees in Europe and will make some significant invest- ments. “Hundreds of these people will be located right here in our technology centre in Munich,” he said. He added that he believes his next decade at Google (as executive chair- man) will be more interesting than the first. “Technology will finally start do- ing what we want, instead of us telling technology what we want it to do.” Google has a number of key opera- tions around Europe, including ones in Dublin, Munich and Zurich, as well as offices in London and Sweden.
Accenture to creAte 100 neW r&D Jobs in Dublin
Accenture will create 100 new IDA Ire- land-supported jobs at a new centre in Dublin over the coming four years. Accenture already employs 1,300
people in Dublin in a range of areas including management consultancy, technology services and outsourcing. The jobs will be based at a new re-
search and innovation centre and its role will involve advanced statistical modelling for companies and govern- ments. The jobs will be aimed at graduates
to PhD-level candidates who have analytical and statistics experience. Predictive analytics applies advanced statistical modelling techniques to internal and external data sources to generate deeper insights that help businesses and governments drive bet- ter outcomes. One of the world’s leading automotive suppliers, Valeo, is to create 100 new jobs in Galway over the next three years as part of a major expansion and research, development and inno- vation (RD&I) investment. Valeo is undertaking a major R&D initiative at the operation in Tuam to target a growing share of the camera market with the development of the next generation of new camera/vision systems and supporting technologies for vehicle parking and manoeuvring. Valeo Vision Systems has built up
a strong RD&I competency at the plant and has developed close links with NUIG with the establishment of the Connacht Automotive Research (CAR) Group in 2004. The additional jobs will be recruited
across its manufacturing and RD&I operations. The investment will in- volve expansion of the plant, includ- ing the lease of existing units on the Tuam Business park, investment in advanced technology, training and RD&I.
