REMOTE AND ON LOCATION

Kayaking allows access to some of the world’s most remote and least visited places. With the privilege to be among the few to visit these places, there comes the duty to protect this cherished wilderness. The time has passed when you could paddle a beautiful river and be confident that it would remain that way until your return. It’s hard to blame others for hesitating to stand up and help protect an area they have never

seen. Especially if they don’t even know it’s threatened. With this in mind, Mike McKay created the river stewardship focused Internet TV series CURRENTS with the help of fellow paddlers Mike Kobzik, Blake Mahoney and Tyler Fox. “The project serves as a means of educating a broader audience about threats to the

world’s rivers,” says McKay. “CURRENTS helps highlight the intrinsic value of preserving riv- ers in their natural state.” The documentary-style series follows paddlers in search of whitewater around the globe,

while telling the stories of endangered waterways and the people fighting to protect them. The series also shares success stories by highlighting projects that develop paddlesports and help save wilderness and recreational areas. The first season of CURRENTS included coverage of issues spanning the U.S., Canada,

Ecuador, Australia, South Korea, Thailand and Mexico. Looking ahead, partnerships with big name filmmakers and funding from like-minded, environmentally aware organizations have the second season shaping up to be both successful and highly entertaining, says McKay. “2011 will be a busy season for us here at CURRENTS,” says McKay. And with plans to film

projects in Chile, China, New Zealand and northern Ontario in the works, watching upcoming episodes will undoubtedly be time well spent off the river. —Tyler Fox If you would like to learn more about the project or share an issue facing your local area, visit CURRENTS online at www.Five2Nine.ca, on Facebook or on Vimeo.
