CONTRUBTORS DOUG AMMONS

In Missoula, Montana-based Ammons’ self-described “real life,” he is a father of five, husband of 27 years and editor of two international science journals. He’s also found time for over 40 first descents worldwide. To contrast kayaking and mountain climbing in this issue’s Flushed (page 46), Ammons drew upon his friendships with world class climbers like Will Gadd, and his experience “climbing” underwater up the bed of the frigid Blackfoot River. “Figuring out a route while holding my breath with the current as liquid gravity.”

NEW SEASON March 2011

LOUISE URWIN

A native Kiwi, photographer, pro kayaker and remis- sive accountant “LU” Urwin was in familiar territory to capture the opening spread for “New Zealand” (page 36). “It wouldn’t be a trip into the Styx without getting the car stuck. For some reason, we always think it’s worth pushing to save a few meters on the hour-long walk in.”

TYLER FOX

Fox didn’t have to travel far to research “New Zea- land” (page 36). Fox has called Okere Falls, New Zealand, home for the past four winters. A paddler, photographer and videographer, he spends many months of the year living out of a backpack, kayak and shuttle vehicle but says of his adopted home, “There’s something to be said for having a river in your backyard and a paddling community at your doorstep.”

DAN CALDWELL

A seasonal raft guide and kayak instructor, Caldwell also runs his own adventure video production company and is a Rapid staffer, filming Rapid Media TV. During the nude pho- to shoot for “Decent Exposure” (page 17), he says, “I met two of my neighbors for the first time—awkward.”

PEOPLE . PLA CES .

SCOTT MACGREGOR

MacGregor is the founder and publisher of Rapid and the host of the new Rapid Media TV. He says his job perks include “blowing out of the office to the Green River and Charlotte whitewater park, test- ing new boats and interviewing celebrities like Andrew Holcombe.” When he’s not on the road or on the phone, he’s on the Mada- waska River with his wife Tanya and two children, Dougie and Kate.
