had to be relearned? If only it was that simple for Mark Hogancamp. On April 8, 2000, Hogancamp was dragged from a bar by five drink- ing companions and beat sense- less in the parking lot. He spent forty days in the hospital, nine of them in a coma, underwent ex- tensive facial reconstruction and had his memory expunged. Unable to afford therapy,


Hogancamp set out to create his own deeply personal ap- proach to healing his “psychic wounds.” He decides that the most effective means of chart- ing a course back to reality is through building a world all his own. Hogancamp constructs Marwencol, a 1/6-scale replica of a mythical World War II village located somewhere in Belgium (just five feet north of Hogan- camp’s mind’s eye) and populated by action figures all assigned an alter ego based on a character in Hogancamp’s real life. (He cast his mother in the guise of a Pussy Galore doll from “Goldfinger.”) It’s also a superb means of reculti- vating Hogancamp’s hand-eye coordination skill and eventually rejoining the “real world.” I kept waiting for an aerial shot of a full scale backyard repli- ca of his universe, but Marwencol is more like a series of dioramas
