CONTRIBUTORS Virginia Marshall

Marshall,Adventure Kayak’s senior editor, is a Paddle Canada-certified instructor trainer and experienced sea kayak guide, so she’s used to being on the leadership side of kayaking events. The Georgian Bay Storm Gathering (“Gather- ing for a Storm,” page 44) was a welcome change. “I wasn’t responsible for anyone,” says Marshall, “so I could relax and enjoy the carnage.”

Lorenzo Del Bianco

Rock the Boat and Dream Departures il- lustrator Del Bianco has been creating custom art for Adventure Kayak since 2003. Del Bianco enjoys spending time with his family, moonlighting at the Mountain Equipment Co-op, cycling, kayaking and hiking when he isn’t at his drawing stool—a seat from a Boreal Ellesmere kayak (see In the Hatch, Fall 2007, www.adventurekayakmag.com/0004).

Bryan Smith

A Michigan native, Smith moved to Squamish, B.C., to be close to mountains, rivers, rock and ocean. As a filmmaker and owner of Reel Water Productions, he produces renowned outdoor lifestyle and adventure films. “It was one of the bigger adrenaline rushes I’ve had shooting kayaking,” he says of his work for Stills and “Best of the West” (pages 16 and 35). “Getting these photos would have been impos- sible without bomber coastal kayaking skills.”

Dave Quinn

Professional writer Dave Quinn was recog- nized in 2010 with a Gold Award from the International Regional Magazine Association for his work in British Columbia Magazine. A longtime sea kayaker and new adoptive father, Quinn shares his wealth of knowledge in “Best of the West” (page 35) and says he’s “looking forward to passing on my love and respect for the West Coast” to the baby boy that joined his family from Lesotho.

Shawna Franklin

and Leon Sommé Hailing from Minnesota and New Orleans, respectively, Franklin and Sommé “found an island paradise” on Orcas Island, Washing- ton, in 1995. The pair own and operate Body Boat Blade International and have paddled around Iceland and Haida Gwaii. Sommé says he’s “struck by how little of the great information in paddlesports is disseminated to the general public” (Rock the Boat, page 24). Franklin declassifies the foolproof roll on page 28. Off the water, she can be found circumnavigating Orcas Island in her running shoes, while Sommé keeps kayaking muscles toned hula hooping.
