The MACUL Conference @ 35

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BY RIC WILTSE

Tere is still time to register for the 35th annual MACUL conference “Essentials for 21st Century Teaching and Learning”. Tis year’s conference promises to be the best yet! Tere are hundreds of opportunities to learn, share and connect with other technology loving educators.

Sessions are available at every level of technology proficiency from “just-getting-started” to “techno-geek”. And this year we’ve added some new features to the conference that encourage you to meet with like-minded educators to explore new ideas, share lessons learned and have some fun.

Some “can’t miss” opportunities

at this year’s conference: • Be sure to BYOL (bring your own laptop - ipad etc). Once again we’re featuring BYOL sessions that put you in charge of your learning.

• Don’t miss either of this year’s featured speakers, Rushton Hurley and Hall Davidson. Hurley will kick us off with his infectious enthusiasm for technology and education and Davidson will close the conference, challenging us to become bold educators willing to think differently about teaching and learning.

It is hard to believe that this year marks the 35th annual MACUL conference. For some members, this will be a first-time experience, while the majority of attendees will be returning for another MACUL conference. And then there are the real

veterans who will be attending for over 15 times, and even a few attendees who were at the first conference held in 1976.

Here’s what one of the 1976 conference attendees had to say…

“I don’t remember much about the first meeting other than the general excitement, which has not changed over the years. I seem to remember that Karl Zinn from the University of Michigan was one of the presenters, and Radio Shack was a primary exhibitor with demos of it’s remarkable TRS 80 PCs. How to best teach Basic was the hot topic, but I can’t be sure as after near 35 MACUL conferences, they tend to run together.

I do remember for sure, that this was an organization that was going to grow into something special, that I wanted to continue to be involved with. However, I could not imagine just how remarkable it would become.”

-Bob Leneway, Associate Professor Western Michigan University

Frank R. Miracola, MACUL Leader As with all who knew him, I was deeply saddened when Frank Miracola passed away in October 2010. Frank served on the MACUL Board, including one year (1997-1998) as my Vice President. The next year I served as his Past President on the Executive Board, and he was my first
