More than 2,000 physicians, podiatrists, nurses, therapists and researchers are expected to attend the 24th Annual Symposium on Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society (SAWC/WHS). The meeting is the premier educational wound care

programme within this clinical field and is the largest annual gathering of wound care clinicians in the US. The conference will be held at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Dallas, Texas. The WHS, a nonprofit organisation composed of clinical

and basic scientists, and wound care specialists, will co-sponsor the SAWC/WHS meeting.

CLINICAL UPDATE

Evidence-based nursing reduces leakage and skin irritation Correlations between leakage and peristomal skin conditions have been found in a new global study conducted among 3,017 users of ostomy products. The study demonstrated that leakage and skin irritation can be significantly reduced through evidence-based nursing.

Relying on clinical data, global tools and stoma care nurses’ knowledge and experience to choose the right product and treatment can also significantly improve the quality of life for patients. The Global DialogueStudy was carried out in 18 countries around the world and more than 500 nurses were involved

in recruiting patients, and monitoring and reporting observations and findings. The 500 nurses involved in the DialogueStudy were all introduced to the use of the Ostomy Skin Tool and Stoma

Quality of Life questionnaire at the beginning of the process. The study shows that overall leakage was brought down from 90-60% with the SenSura ® Coloplast ostomy bag.

Some patients still have leakage problems, but this could be due to challenging body types (scars, dips or creases in the peristomal skin area). The Global DialogueStudy is, to date, the largest real life study within the field of ostomy. The study runs over a six

to eight-week period and focuses on monitoring the skin condition surrounding stomas. This is an area prone to skin disorders due to extra stress that is put on the skin. The study has lasted for four years (2006-2010) and has an international scope covering Denmark, the UK, Germany,

France, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Iceland, the US, Canada, Argentina, Japan, Australia, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. For more information please visit: http://www.us.coloplast.com/About/news/Pages/New-ostomy-study.aspx
