he inclusion of the aviation sector in the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme has been accompanied by a great deal of acrimony between the industry and the European Commission.
The industry, which is responsible for 2% of global emissions at the moment, says that Europe’s regional scheme is a mistake and that the global nature of aviation means that only a worldwide initiative will work; Brussels thinks the industry, which is predicted to see air traffic double in the next 15 years, is drag- ging its feet and so it acted unilaterally.
