CONSULTANCY CONTRACTS St Germans PS opening approaches

St Germans pumping station (PS) near Kings Lynn in Norfolk is built on Middle Level Commissioners’ (MLC) main drain. It lifts storm water and land drainage to the tidal River Ouse, providing flood protection for 25,000 buildings and 70,000 hectares of high-quality agricultural land.

Following a huge storm event in 1998, where the station ran continuously for 12 days, MLC decided to review the facility and identified that its capacity needed to be increased from the existing 70 cumec to 100 cumec. Atkins was employed to carry out the upgrade in three phases, with the team initially carrying out a feasibility study to examine outline designs and life-costs of a new station against a refurbishment programme. It also considered seven locations for the new station and a range of power options.

For the second phase it researched and submitted economic justification to Defra on behalf of MLC for grant aid. The third phase included detailed design, environmental statement planning, waste management exemption, OJEU, tender and site implementation and contract administration. The environment around St Germans presented significant challenges and it was essential that the old pumping station remained operational until the new one was completed. The flat landscape means that noise carries large distances and the visual impact had to be considered. There is also a

wealth of ecological and heritage features around the station. Atkins worked closely with regulators, planning authorities, MLC, the local electricity supplier EDF, and contractors throughout the project. By late April 2010 the new PS was brought online to take over from the old station, with this being demolished towards the end of the year. The station will be formally opened in early 2011.
