CONSULTANCY CONTRACTS UK’s longest secant piling installed

What is thought to be the UK’s longest ever secant piling is under construction in north London. The works will form the perimeter of the inlet pumping station shaft at Deephams Sewage Treatment Works in Edmonton and are expected to make the nearby River Lee cleaner and healthier for aquatic life, as well as improving the riverside environment.

The approach has cut

temporary works costs by 20% and slashed a valuable five weeks off the construction programme. Contractor J Murphy & Sons says the challenging shaft design, resulting from the use of 29m long piling, has also triggered further innovative construction solutions – saving yet more time and cost. The obvious construction choice for a large, 18.5m diameter shaft, founded 24m deep in water-bearing Thanet Sands, was to use diaphragm walling – and Murphy tendered on that basis. Once on site though, the team looked again at the constricted location and reconsidered the construction method. The only other option, secant piling, was initially considered tough-going and risky. It would necessitate 29m-long male piles driven both through adjoining females either side, and into clays and gravels of variable strengths, to found in the cohesion-less sands. However, Murphy’s piling division has experience in Ireland where the use of lower strength concrete for female secant piles is often successfully adopted. Armed with this knowledge, the team opted to trail blaze with a UK first and halve the concrete strength of the 24m long female piles to just 10N/mm2, so considerably easing drilling of the longer males. Murphy’s contracts manager, Gavin Symonds reflected: “Not only has piling proved 20% cheaper, but it has also saved us an estimated six weeks on the diaphragm walling tender programme. The piling itself has been completed five weeks faster than we planned.”
