CIEH LANDS CHINA HEALTH CONTRACT

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has secured a landmark deal to provide health and safety training to the Municipality of Chongqing, China – the first of its kind for any UK public health organisation.

The CIEH will review health and safety legislation in China with the aim of introducing ‘UK standards’; conduct a health and safety audit of Chongqing’s industries; develop a plan to introduce an inspection system for Chinese workplaces; and establish a register of health and safety consultants.

CIEH chief executive Graham Jukes said: “This deal represents a significant milestone for the CIEH and cements our position as a major force in the global environmental health market.”

The CIEH has worked in China since 1998, when it established a partnership with the Hong Kong Food Council. Since then more than 14,000 food handlers in Hong Kong have achieved a CIEH food hygiene certificate.

In addition, the CIEH has formed a partnership with the China Chainstore and Franchise Association, and through it with major retailers operating in China, to deliver best-practice food safety training.

Report identifies new Chinese opportunities

Business Secretary Dr Vince Cable has urged UK firms to explore opportunities in China’s regional cities. He also welcomed the growth of Chinese businesses operating in the UK, and investment from Chinese enterprises in R&D projects which have safeguarded over 1,200 jobs. He said: “China is not one market. It is many markets. UK companies can reap the benefits of trading and investing in the world’s second-largest economy. There are provinces in China with greater populations than Ireland, Denmark and Belgium put together. They represent huge opportunities for UK firms. For companies new to China it can be hard to decide where to start, but the answer lies in seeking out the city or region that matches your business needs.”

Opportunities for UK Businesses in China’s Regional Cities identifies 35 regional cities in China that are most attractive for UK businesses.

Relations with China continue to grow, with investments across the UK, including London, Oxford, Cambridge and Scotland.
