Fall Community Service Day
On Friday, October 29, more than 30 Chamber members and friends spent several hours volunteering at the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Fall Community Service Day. This year, we planted bulbs around the grounds of the new Cambridge Public Library. With teams from Cambridge Trust Company, TD Banknorth, Cambridge Savings Bank, Fidelity Investments and more, we dug, planted, and secured an army of bulbs that will beautify the grounds in early spring. With the help of Ellen Coppinger from the Cambridge Department of Public Works, we were taught how to prepare the ground and plant properly. The City of Cambridge supplied our materials and worked closely with us throughout the project.
Since Halloween was upon us, the day was enhanced with the CRLS Students in their Halloween costumes moving between classes, and engaging with our volunteers.

Gubernatorial Forums
The CCC’s recent gubernatorial forums provided great access to the top candidates for the office. The Cambridge Chamber hosted breakfast with both Governor Deval Patrick and Charlie Baker. Despite the mobs of reporters, the setting was intimate and allowed both candidates the chance to have an open conversation with attendees and show a much more personal side of themselves.
On October 8, the CCC welcomed Governor Deval Patrick to the Charles Hotel for his candidate breakfast. The governor spoke about his views on the successes and challenges the Commonwealth has and will experience under his leadership. He addressed questions pertaining to health insurance, the economy and Cambridge’s role in the economic vitality of our state.
On October 22, we hosted candidate Charles Baker. Mr. Baker shared his goals and target items if elected to lead the Commonwealth. He pointed to the need for immediate attention toward the jobless rating, insurance costs and the actual cost of providing healthcare. As did Governor Patrick, Mr. Baker acknowledged how fortunate we are to have a community such as Cambridge and the research, technology and discoveries taking place in this community and the larger Commonwealth are indicators that we must do more to support this sector.
Both candidates shared their time with the attendees before and after the event and didn’t hesitate to have individual conversations as they worked their way through the crowd.
Draper High Tech & Science C3 Tour
On Wednesday, November 10, Charles Stark Draper Laboratory hosted a C3 (Cool Cambridge Company) Tour for the Chamber’s High Tech & Science Committee. From spaceflights to microsystems, it’s all happening at Draper Labs.
With more than 30 people in attendance, Draper showcased some of the projects they are working on including the Hopper, which is in competition to win the coveted $20M Google Lunar X Prize.
Attendees heard from Strategic Business Development Manager and Systems Engineer Dr. Jana Schwartz. Physicist and Biomedical Engineer Dr. Jeff Borenstein discussed the intra-cochlear drug delivery device that he and his team are developing to help restore hearing. Space Systems Engineer Bobby Cohanim spoke about how Draper’s guidance, navigation and control technology flies a robotic spacecraft designed to hop on the Moon and Mars.
The CCC’s commitment to youth through the Cambridge Challenge was highlighted by the attendance of a dozen youth from Tutoring Plus as special guests. Thank you to CS Draper Laboratory for hosting the tour and, with Microsoft, sponsoring the 2010 High Tech & Science Programming.
