Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV), a Chamber member, sits on the Community Outreach Committee and is one of many local Cambridge nonprofit agencies serving the youth of Cambridge. This holiday season they set a great example of how to create partnerships between the youth of Cambridge and the business community. The 1 in 365 Campaign, part of the Cambridge Challenge is about one action that brings together a business and youth to share experiences and learn from each other.
Cambridge Systematics, a Cambridge-based transportation consulting firm based at Alewife, has volunteered for 12 years with middle school students at the Peabody School through a Netpals emailing mentoring program coordinated by CSV. CSV, a non-profit charity, designs and runs programs for individual volunteers and for teams of employees to get involved in the schools. Their collaboration has grown and deepened organically over many years.
To deepen their connection with their Netpals, Cambridge Systematics initiated a holiday card contest several years ago, in which 6th grade students from the Peabody School submit dozens of inventive card designs. In past years, the winning card was turned into a paper greeting, but this year, the winning card was digitally animated and sent as an e-greeting to several thousand Cambridge Systematics clients. View the animated winning card at

This year’s winner, Kiara Osiris, a 6th grade student, created a holiday card with unique energy and spirit. Kiara is very interested in the arts. She designs her own clothes, enjoys storytelling, loves to sing and plays soccer. She plans on working hard on her singing so that when she grows up, she can be a singer.
As Netpals, employees of Cambridge Systematics are matched with middle school students who correspond weekly throughout the school year by email, sharing written work and friendly letters. The Netpals meet several times during the year, at the school and at Cambridge Systematics’ offices. To get involved with Cambridge School Volunteers, visit
