From Slovakia via the University of Cumbria to career success

A collaboration between the university and Rocket Consulting leads to student Peter Hrebik landing his dream job in his dream location.

Computing and secured a job with Rocket Consulting Ltd, prestigious specialists in the design and implementation of warehouse management and logistics execution systems using SAP software and mobile data entry radio frequency (RF) devices.

In the final year of his course Peter selected a module that gave him the opportunity to work on one of three projects that Rocket Consulting was running in partnership with the university. He developed a Three-dimensional Virtual Warehouse Monitor that enables visualisation of a warehouse and its contents, using a SAP warehouse system and GPS data. An RF scanner is used to give detail of stock location.

Peter, 25 and originally from Poprad, Slovakia, chose to study in Cumbria because he had friends in the area. On arriving in Carlisle he spent the first two years improving his English language and working as a doorman at nightclubs in the city. Now, three years on, he has graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Applied

Impressing his future employers was no easy task for Peter. Rocket Consulting is a team of 35 SAP supply chain and warehouse solution experts who investigate and develop emerging technologies. Each Rocket consultant spends one day a week on research

and development, and Glenn Walsh devoted this time to mentoring students at the university and supervising their work on live research projects. Glenn says: “Peter’s technical capabilities were excellent and he was able to offer knowledge in an area that the company was lacking - Java and OpenGL - so it was great to add him to the team. He demonstrated an ability to get on with the work unsupervised and, as we all work remotely, this was vital.”

Having made his home in Carlisle, Peter was delighted to secure the job with Rocket as he says it can be hard to find such an employment opportunity in Cumbria.

Rocket Consulting is so pleased with the results of its partnership with the university that it plans to run another final-year project for the course next year. Glenn recommends this process to other companies: “Working closely with the students and watching them work to real- life briefs and deadlines means you can spot the new and rising talent in your field.”

University’s Lancaster kitchens five-star rated

The food standards agency (FSA) launched the national food hygiene rating scheme on the 1 October 2010.

Lancaster’s senior environmental health officer, Andrew Seddon, has awarded top grading to the catering outlets at the Lancaster campus. Part of the inspection includes temperature monitoring, pest control, storage, quality of suppliers, delivery temperature controls, cleaning schedules, food safety policys, and general good hygiene practices.

The food hygiene rating reflects the standards found on the date of inspection or visit by the local authority. Ratings are given on a scale 0 (urgent improvement necessary) up to 5 (very good). Chris Dickson, the university‘s head chef in Lancaster has worked tirelessly with his team and managers to make sure the

standards of hygiene are kept consistently high at all times. All members of staff working in catering have attended food hygiene training courses, and this has proved beneficial to us gaining our top- grade good food hygiene ratings across the board.

A very pleased and chuffed-to-bits Chris said: “The ratings certificates will be displayed on the door of our premises and thus should give our customers even more confidence when choosing to dine in our establishments.” Chris also wanted to thank his team for all their had work and effort over the past year, which has helped us gain top marks from the local authority.
